Why Checking Your Ticket Matters
Checking your ticket is the single most important thing you can do after a draw — and every year a great deal of prize money goes unclaimed for one simple reason: nobody checked. Tickets end up in coat pockets, down the back of the sofa, or sitting unopened in an email inbox while the person who bought them has no idea they've won.
£63.8 million
The largest unclaimed lottery prize in British history. A EuroMillions ticket bought near Stevenage for the draw on 8 June 2012 matched all five numbers and both Lucky Stars. Nobody ever came forward, and the deadline passed with the money going to good causes instead.
You don't have forever. In the UK, a EuroMillions prize must be claimed within 180 days of the draw — roughly six months. In Ireland the window is shorter still at 90 days. Once that deadline passes, the prize and any interest it has earned go to the National Lottery's Good Causes Fund, and there is no appeal. Even a jackpot.
So check every ticket, every draw, however unpromising it looks — and remember that most wins aren't jackpots. Match just two main numbers and you've won something. If you bought online, your numbers are checked automatically and you'll be notified, but a paper ticket is only ever as good as the person who remembers to look at it.
