What Is the New York Lottery?

The New York Lottery is the third modern lottery in the United States, launched in 1967 after New Yorkers voted in favour of a state lottery by a 60% majority in a referendum on 8 November 1966. It is administered by the New York State Government and all proceeds go directly towards funding education in the state.

Lottery games have a long history in New York — parts of New York City Hall were financed using early lottery funds. Today the lottery contributes billions of dollars annually to the New York State education fund, making it one of the most socially significant lotteries in the world.

The New York Lotto is the flagship draw game, played twice weekly on Wednesday and Saturday. New York also participates in both Powerball and Mega Millions, giving players three major lottery options. Only the New York Lotto is available to players outside New York State — scratch cards and keno games are restricted to state residents.

More than 50 years of funding New York education

November 1966

New Yorkers Vote Yes

On 8 November 1966, New Yorkers voted in a referendum with a 60% majority in favour of establishing a state lottery. This paved the way for what would become one of the most important lottery programs in the USA — with all proceeds dedicated to education funding.

1967

Launch — America's Third Modern Lottery

The New York Lottery launched in 1967, making it the third modern state lottery in the United States. From the very start, lottery funds were directed toward public education — a tradition that continues to this day and has contributed billions of dollars to New York schools.

Historic roots

Lotteries Built New York

New York's relationship with lotteries predates the modern game. Early lottery funds helped finance the construction and upkeep of major New York institutions — parts of New York City Hall were built using lottery proceeds, underlining the long-standing role of lottery funding in the state's infrastructure.

2010 onward

Joining Powerball & Mega Millions

New York joined the cross-selling agreement with both Powerball and Mega Millions in January 2010, giving New York residents access to two of America's biggest multi-state lottery games alongside the New York Lotto. This expanded the prize potential available to New York players significantly.
